Shift's main motivation, even more than power, is fruit. The Calormene are able to get him to do anything as long as they provide him with an endless supply of oranges and bananas. Shift is bossy and not kind. He lacks patience and he rules as harshly as Tirian is benevolent. He ends up being shoved into the stable at the last battle and is not seen again.

It his influence in this book is actually stronger than ever before.
