What is the Red Eye virus?
The Red Eye virus is responsible for the deaths of countless animals all across the world. People have struggled to cure the virus for many years and have accepted the fact that there will likely be a total extinction of animal life unless a miracle happens - a miracle which the main character of the novel, Kester, is trying to make come true.

Why is Kester able to speak with animals?
Despite being unable to speak with humans, Kester is able to speak with the few animals that have managed to survive the Red Eye virus. The novel explains that Kester is able to speak with animals because he has a "gift" that few - if any - others have.

What do animals think of the Red Eye virus?
The animals, which call the Red Eye Virus the Berry-Eye, are understandably very frightened by the virus because it is capable of killing all of them. They actively avoid anyone afflicted with the virus and do their best to survive.
