People have struggled to cure the virus for many years and have accepted the fact that there will likely be a total extinction of animal life unless a miracle happens - a miracle which the main character of the novel, Kester, is trying to make come true.

    Despite being unable to speak with humans, Kester is able to speak with the few animals that have managed to survive the Red Eye virus. The novel explains that Kester is able to speak with animals because he has a "gift" that few - if any - others have.
