Imagery
The story's opening depicts the sense of sight, giving readers a perfect opportunity to see the room under which Kaster is locked. The author writes, "The room is locked shut, and you need an electronic keycard to open the door. If you could open it, you would be in a long corridor with absolutely nothing in it apart from cameras in the ceiling and a fat man in a purple jacket and trousers sitting opposite on a plastic chair. Sleeping, most likely.” The imagery is significant because it illustrates the brutal nature of the academy where Kester is taken. The children in this facility are not criminals, but they are treated as unlawful citizens.
Paradox
The main paradox is that after Kester escapes from the academy, he later looks for his father, which is quite the contrary because it should be the other way around. Unfortunately, the father neglects his son, and he does not care.
Parallelism
There is a parallelism between Kester’s thought that he is not a troubled child and his escape from the facility.
