The letter which has surfaced will implicate Leslie in Hammond’s murder. And it will prove that Leslie and Hammond were lovers. Thus, she wants it suppressed in order that she isn’t hanged for her crime and so that her husband doesn’t find out.

What causes Joyce to tell Robert the truth?
Joyce has concealed Leslie’s betrayal from his oldest friend throughout the trial. He only tells Crosbie the truth when he learns that Robert is preparing to purchase land which means the $10,000 Joyce used of his own money won’t be repaid. So at the risk of not getting his money back he tells Robert the truth about Leslie and Hammond.

How does Joyce come into possession of the letter?
Joyce has employed a very talented young clerk, Ong Chi Seng to assist him. Seng is helping with Leslie’s case when he reveals to his employer that he knows a letter exists that will surely convict Leslie. Thus, Joyce comes into possession of the letter by being blackmailed by his clerk.
