Opening

The opening of the play reveals the murder, but we do not know why Hammond was shot. This imagery sets up the rest of the play as clues are uncovered to reveal the truth about what we, the audience, have seen.

Stained

Robert and Leslie return to their bungalow, the scene of the crime. The imagery staggers us with the knowing that their home will forever be stained with the blood of Hammond, and Leslie’s betrayal.

Opium Den

Transition

Leslie is left alone with Joyce after being escorted in by Mrs. Parker, who is quite fond of Leslie. Soon after, Leslie reveals her exhaustion at having to be around Parker. This imagery reveals how Leslie’s capacity to manipulate people with ease.
