What do we know about Whitechapel based on the prologue? How does the prologue set the tone for the novel?
The prologue introduces Whitechapel to the readers. He is trying to erase his past and forget his painful memories. We know that the last time he cried was when he witnessed the death of a boy whom he loved as if he were his own. The boy was whipped to death when Whitechapel believed that a good talking-to or a less brutal beating would have been sufficient for the boy to have learned from his mistakes.
