The Theme of Friendship in LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring 9th Grade
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring follows the adventures of Frodo, Pippin, Merry, and Sam, who set out on a journey to destroy the One Ring. When the party finally leaves the Shire, they encounter many dangers as black riders, and other ghastly enemies are hunting them. Throughout the book, the theme, that friendship can help people be successful is demonstrated when enemies attack Frodo, the dangerous setting of Middle Earth, and the success of Frodo’s quest.
As Frodo leaves his hobbit-hole, Bilbo’s words remind him about the importance of teamwork when traveling in the dangerous world of Middle Earth. Frodo remembers Bilbo saying, “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door...You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to” (Tolkien 74). During this quote, Frodo remembers what his uncle said many years ago about traveling in Middle Earth since Bilbo himself undertook a similar journey when he was younger. The quote itself talks about one needing to be immensely cautious and aware while traveling. In the current setting of the book, it is a great time of unrest, and the setting of Middle Earth is particularly dangerous, especially for the party....
