The Intoxicated: A Close Read

Objective:

Students will learn to unpack Shirley Jackson's meaning-rich short stories, one sentence at a time.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.5

Structure:

Once students have completed their assigned reading for Day One, split students into small groups or pairs. Each group should select a passage of which to conduct a close reading from the collection's first story, "The Intoxicated." Passage selection should be done as a class so that each group’s selection is unique and there are no duplications.
