The Wolf
After Helen arrives in the West, the common animal that society mentions is the Wolf. The Wolf seems to be guiding her past through the west, and they seem to be following its sounds to get to society. The wolf symbolizes an animal of navigation, and society has put trust into the fact that it can lead them to safety.
The rising sun
Most of the book actually takes place in an evening setting, as Helen often describes gloom and dark streaks in the sky as she is traveling through the west. The rising sun encompasses imagery of happiness and hope and is always mentioned when something positive is happening in the book.
White and Black Horse
This imagery seen throughout the book pertaining to horses seems to classify the personality and definition of the colors. The white horses usually have more confidence, and need to be roped back by strong men. The black horses are more beautiful but calm and shy as they merely trod along. These colors are seen in recurring fashion in the book.
Birds
To Helen, birds are a symbol of life and longing, as they have the freedom to fly wherever and their voices seem to keep you company. However, in the West, there are no birds in the forest so its silent. Whenever Helen feels uncomfortable in an unfriendly atmosphere, she always refers back to the birds.
