The Measures Taken and Other Lehrstucke Summary

They got an order that was more important than their lives combined. The four agitators left Moscow in order to spread the light of knowledge and teach communist ideology to ignorant workers who slaved at factories day and night. Upon their arrival to China, they met a young communist whose heart beat for the revolution. That was his chance to help those who were in need and save them from hunger and other struggle. However, the young comrade’s hopes were crashed as soon as he learned that Moscow had only failed to send them not only a locomotive or a tractor, but even a little note with the instructions. Regardless, he thought he was obliged to help them.

They went from one place to another, trying to show poor workers how much exploited they were. Unlike his wiser companions, the young comrade wasn’t prepared for the terrible sights he saw. Neither could he pretend. His honestly and open-heartedness were the main reason of several serious failures. The longer the group of communists traveled the better they understood that the young man would cause only trouble. They tried to be patient, but they didn’t dare to put success of the operation at stake. Thus, it was decided to kill the comrade.

To their credit, the group didn’t kill the young man in sleep. They honestly informed him of their plans. To everyone’s surprise, the young communist – who was crashed by his numerous fiascoes – didn’t protest. On the contrary, he was more than willing to oblige. They had shot him and got rid of his body quickly, for they were pursued by the enemies of the revolution.

The four agitators got back home to testify before the control chorus that they had committed a crime. However, the latter concluded that their actions were completely justified.
