Group Work
Objective:
Students will examine symbolism present in everyday life as well as within the novel.

Structure:
In this activity, students will focus both on symbolism in general, as well as symbolism present in the novel.
Everyday Life Symbols (20 minutes)
First, as a class, discuss symbols. Symbolism allows people to communicate beyond the limits of language and humans use symbols all the time. Create a definition as a class. It should be something along the lines of:
Symbols: A person, situation, or object that represents something else.
