The Mysteries of Udolpho is Radcliffe's first novel after finding commercial success with her third book, The Romance of the Forest. Since its publication, Udolpho has proven to be deeply influential on a number of renowned authors, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Jane Austen. It is also a prime example of the gothic aesthetic in literature.
