Pre-School Play section where no one played

David remembers that when he was a child, he used to go to the so called Pre-School Play section with other children. But, as it happened, there was no games in the section: “We had to listen to stories some old woman read to us out of a grownup book that we didn't understand”. It was unclear for the boy why it was called a “Play” section but no one ever played there. The irony shows a childish amusement of the world of grownups where actions and their actual names didn’t coincide.

“Licentious” book

Mr. Watkins, the deacon of the local church, was quite an interesting man. As David remembers “he was always in the paper trying to make the country dry, trying to keep the colored people from voting, trying to take Gone with the Wind out of the county library because so many people were reading it and he just knew it was "licentious”. But when he was asked if he read the book he answered that he would never lower himself to such a degree." The irony represents the low intellectual degree of the churchman.

Strange body

Mrs. Watkins, David’s first teacher, had a very straight body and the boy was wondering, how woman could have such body because both his mother and Aunt Mae were round, so he could lay against them and feel comfortable. He doubted if someone would feel comfortable laying against Mrs. Watkins. The irony shows boy’s amusement about the figure of Mr’s Watkins.
