The Only Good Indians Irony

The Only Good Indians Irony

The President's Words

The President said that “Our nation [The United States] is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values, and indoctrinate our children." However, it was colonist Americans who wiped out Native Americans history, defamed their heroes, and indoctrinated its youth by sending them to schools against their wills.

Hunters

The hunters go into a sweat lodge because they consider it to be one of the safest places on the reservation; the sweat lodge, in fact, is not the safest place on the farm.

“INDIAN MAN KILLED IN DISPUTE OUTSIDE BAR"

The line “INDIAN MAN KILLED IN DISPUTE OUTSIDE BAR" is ironic because, historically, Indian men were killed because of racism.

The Only Good Indians

While The Only Good Indians attempts to paint Indians (Native Americans) in a positive light and attempts to illustrate the sheer damage done by colonizers to Native Americans, the book's title The Only Good Indians refers to the quote from racist, brutal U.S. General Philip Sheridan, who said that the "only good Indian is a dead Indian."

Suicide

Gabe, despite wanting to live, agrees to kill himself at the behest of the Elk spirit.
