The Piano Imagery

The Piano Imagery

On the Shore

Ada's piano is left on the shore by Stewart. We see an image with it sitting on the sand as the waves threaten to wash over it. The imagery shows that her beloved possession is being left in an extreme place of vulnerability by her new husband. We understand Ada's loneliness from this image as she only truly connects through her piano.

Veil

Baines is alone in his home and we watch as he lays in his bed and pulls back a scarlet veil covering his bed so that he can see the piano and the stool where Ada plays. We see the sunlight beaming in through the window on to them. The composition shows us that Baines is longing for Ada when she is not with him.

Into the Woods

Ada's piano has been returned which means that she won't be visiting Baines for lessons anymore. Campion shows the back of Ada's head in a close up and moves into a wide shot of the woods with wind blowing through them. The image represents her longing for Baines and her desire to be with him.

Slow Push

Campion shoots Ada and Baines in his home after the piano has been returned to her. They are both in a medium shot that slowly pushes in on their faces. The camera move represents them finally connecting romantically and it is done just as they decide to to make love.
