    Discuss Fowler's feelings about religion.

    Fowler is quick to remind the reader that he is an atheist. Encourage your students to try to identify exactly what Fowler dislikes about religion – both overall, and in specific circumstances. For example, Fowler's distaste for Catholicism is different from his rejection of the Caodaist Pope (you may want to encourage students to learn more about Caodaism and its role in Vietnamese culture in the 1950s). Additionally, examine how Fowler's criticisms of religion relate to his self-identification as a reporter.
