"If we could learn to look instead of gawking,
We'd see the horror in the heart of farce,
If only we could act instead of talking,
We wouldn't always end up on our arse.
This was the thing that nearly had us mastered;
Don't yet rejoice in his defeat, you men!
Although the world stood up and stopped the bastard,
The bitch that bore him is in heat again."
Ui has just taken off his mustache and addresses the audience directly with this speech. He is breaking the fourth wall in order to get the point of the play across: it is the corruption of greedy businessmen that bore Adolf Hitler. We can learn from this lesson that nearly conquered the world, but we cannot keep our eyes closed or be inert any longer. We must pay attention and stand together against the root cause of the rise of Arturo Ui, of Adolf Hitler.
"Who is for me? And let me incidentally add:
Whoever is not for me is against me,
And let him face the consequences. Now
You're free to vote."
Ui addresses the masses of grocers who can vote him out of his position of power. But he warns them without saying it that he will kill them if they vote against him. Hitler did the same thing and won 98% of the Austrian vote after terrifying the voters with death.
"Don't leave, sonnyboy.
Look out the window. You've got company."
Roma says this to Dogsborough's son who has been ordered by his father to get the cops. Roma is threatening their lives, leaving no room for Dogsborough to decline their offer.
