Carnivals and Maskmaking
Kind of Activity:
Artistic Response
Objective:
Students will be able to engage with the historical setting of the play and consider the elements of costume design
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.3
Structure:
By now students will have noticed the central costume-based conceit of the play: namely, if someone you know wears a mask, you won't recognize them. Although this seems particularly ludicrous at the time this lesson plan was written—during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020—students should think about this idea as part of a larger illusion created by the deliberately chaotic and celebratory setting, Carnival in Naples.
