Although Lady Blakeney comes off as haughty and condescending towards some people in public settings, Orczy describes enough of her internal monologue for us to understand that she is actually tender-hearted and a good person, who cares about her husband deeply, despite their challenging relationship. Similarly, Percy presents himself as a buffoon in public, but Orczy writes in descriptions and internal monologues that make clear there is much more than meets the eye there.
