“You’re married to a Six-month-old”
Skeet tells Jackie, “You spoil that child ( Rob)…You never put him down. Whenever he wants something, you give it to him. He sleeps in bed with you!...Now I see why you won’t marry me, because you’re married to a six-month-old.” It is ironic for a woman to wed a baby who is not yet of age. The ironic quip regarding Jackie’ marriage to Rob stresses Jackie’s devotion to her son; this devotion would be paralleled to that which is common among idyllic matrimonies.
“Severing Marriage from Family”
Hobbs elucidates, “ Jackie believed it wasn’t the baby that drove a man to abandonment; she’d observed the bond between a father and his child and knew it to be a true and powerful force.In her estimation, the union of marriage was what ultimately severed the union of family; the arguments over housing and money and time, the ribbing by unfettered friends, the inexorable waning of years and freedom.” Jackie’s reasoning is ironic considering that negligent men would abandon their kids to elude the accountabilities of parenthood. Besides, the argument concerning the segregation on marriage and family is ironic since the solitary resolve of marriage is to form a family. A family cannot flourish in the absence of a compact marriage.
The Irony of a ‘Model Inmate’
Hobbs explicates, “For almost fifteen years now, Skeet had been a model inmate. His record showed to disciplinary red flags- which was miraculous, as perpetrators of violence against women were often wingled out “marked” by other inmates.” Skeet’s coolness is ironic considering that he is incarcerated for murder. It would have been projected that he would exhibit violence towards the other inmates, but he displays unpredicted conducts. Perhaps, he has transformed fundamentally, or perhaps he is donning a mask that would aid him in giving the impression of incorruptibility.
