Hallucinations

The author figuratively uses hallucinations to symbolize the effects of chronic alcoholism. Morris Magellan has gradually lost his control, and he is becoming less useful to his family. Despite being a husband and father, Morris thinks life has no meaning. The author uses this symbolism to illustrate the effects of depression, and most people think that taking alcohol is the solution to their problem.

The mud

The mud is used as a symbol of challenges. According to the author, Morris drinks alcohol to settle the mud to allow him to breathe. When the tide of mud rises, Morris cannot breathe. Therefore, Morris believes that the only way he can move on is through drinking alcohol. Morris's wife knows that his husband suffers from depression, but she cannot prevent him from drinking alcohol.

The symbolism of self-destruction

The character Morris is an emblem of self-destruction. Despite having a good career and family, Morris has resolved to drink alcohol, slowly destroying his life. Unfortunately, Morris does not know that his downfall will negatively affect his wife, daughter, and the people around him.
