Hagar wonders why she never shed a tear from the numerous deaths of her family members but does on the ride home from the doctor’s office. Students may infer as to why this is the case. Some may think that Hagar is bitter and unfeeling, only able to cry for her own misfortunes. Others may think her inability to cry after a death is merely a method of coping with tragedy.
