    Sinuhe begins his story as a member of the prince's court. As soon as the king dies, Sinuhe becomes scared and runs off. Why is Sinuhe scared? What does his fear suggest about the nature of life under such powerful rulers? Do you consider his fears to be reasonable?

    Students may argue that Sinuhe's fears were unreasonable, as he's invited back to Egypt and honored by the new king. However, the very fact that he had this fear, even while serving in the court, reminds us of the ultimate power wielded by rulers. The slightest provocation could turn a ruler against him, especially if he were considered to be part of a conspiracy.
