Read Part I, Chapters 1 and 2.
Note: Prior to students beginning to read the whole book, you may want to have them read the opening lines—among the most famous in all literature: “Mother died today. Or, maybe yesterday. I can’t be sure. The telegram from the Home says: YOUR MOTHER PASSED AWAY. FUNERAL TOMORROW. DEEP SYMPATHY. Which leaves the matter doubtful; it could have been yesterday.” Encourage students to think about what this opening says about the narrator’s relationship with his mother and to predict what this might mean for the story they are about to read.
