Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian-born author. Her first novel, Purple Hibiscus, was published in 2003, and she has since written two other novels, a play, a collection of poetry, and several short stories, some of which appear in The Thing Around Your Neck. Adichie studied medicine in Nigeria before moving to the U.S. and earning degrees in communications and creative writing. Her stories deal with history, politics, women's issues, immigration, Africa, America, and family relations. Many of her works draw on her own life and from stories heard from friends and family, including her family's experiences during the Biafran War in Nigeria.
