There are numerous indicators throughout Chapters 1-4 that tell the readers about Delaney's social status and ideological beliefs. First, when he hits Cándido with his car, he is on his way to the recycling center, suggesting his "liberal humanist" leanings. He also refers to himself in similar terms: "a liberal humanist with an unblemished driving record and a freshly waxed Japanese car with personalized plates" (3).
