Isabel Wilkerson is the author of another nonfiction book called Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent (2020). The book examines the implicit social order that governs American life, in which various racial groups are placed into a rigid hierarchy.

Richard Wright as been called the "Bard of the Great Migration" for his fiction and poetry that focuses on migrant experiences. His novel Native Son (1940) is set in 1930s Chicago at the time of the Great Migration. Wright, along with photographer Edwin Rosskam, also published 12 Million Black Voices (1941), which portrayed the struggles of Black people in both the North and the South.
