    Students will start to think critically about ideas and themes in the novel

    Structure:

    In this activity, the students will begin to think critically about The Watsons Go to Birmingham and some of the themes of the novel. Divide the students into pairs and project the following statements onto the board:

    • One moment can change your life

    • Serious problems can also be funny

    • Where you grow up influences your beliefs

    • Secrets should always be kept

    • Older siblings must always protect younger siblings

    • The world is a fair and just place
