In Kansas, everything is dull and gray. The flat prairie landscape seems endless, her house is small, and her aunt and uncle know no laughter or joy. When Dorothy arrives in Oz, she is taken by its "marvelous beauty." The landscape and animals are colorful, and Dorothy considers the sound of a babbling brook to be "very pleasing to a little girl who has lived so long on the dry, gray prairies." But despite Oz's obvious aesthetic advantage, Dorothy yearns to return to Kansas. She tells the Scarecrow:
