When Fanon's doctoral thesis was rejected, he turned it into the book Black Skin, White Masks, which was published in 1952. The book focuses on the deep trauma experienced within the Black individual living in a white, racist society.

Lewis Gordon is a philosopher and one of the foremost Fanon scholars today. He has published numerous books and articles on Fanon, colonialism, and African-American studies, including What Fanon Said: A Philosophical Introduction to His Life and Thought (2015).

Philosophers, poets, and intellectuals who were contemporary to Fanon and/or influenced him include Aimé Césaire, Jean-Paul Sartre, W.E.B. DuBois, Karl Marx, Richard Wright, and Langston Hughes.
