In-depth Character Analysis

small group activity
Objective:
to consider how characters are constructed at the earliest stage of the narrative
Structure:
Ask students, "How does Charlotte Perkins Gilman construct the two main characters of the narrative in these first four pages?" Students should engage in a close reading of the journal entry to develop an initial understanding of each character.
Each small group will be assigned either the narrator or John for five minutes (simultaneously) and then report to the class on their findings for two minutes (severally). Groups should be encouraged to compare their analysis to the other groups'...
