Thor (2011 Film) Essay Questions

Essay Questions

  1. 1

Discuss the significance of family dynamics and conflict in Thor.

Family and familial conflict is at the heart of Thor. This is exemplified in the complex relationships between Thor, Loki, and their father, Odin. These relationships are unique and are marked by rivalry, jealousy, and the quest to feel loved and approved. For instance, Loki is jealous of his brother Thor because Thor was not adopted, and Loki was. Loki also feels inadequate when he discovers that he has descended from Frost Giants, sending him into a jealous rage with deception. The film shows how Loki's actions impact his family, including Odin's well-intentioned but flawed attempts to protect his sons, which ultimately contribute to their increasing tension. The rivalry between Thor and Loki is not just a personal vendetta but also reflects deeper issues in their relationship (and, more broadly, every sibling relationship). Through these relationships, the film ultimately shows that understanding, forgiveness, and acceptance are key to resolving any issues people may have with their families.

  2. 2

Analyze the Asgard and contrast it with Earth.

Asgard and Earth are opposites. On one hand, Asgard is filled with advanced technology and residents who have been endowed with god-like powers. It is an enchanted land, filled with power and tradition. But with its uniqueness comes tremendous responsibility for those who live there. Because without Asgard, the world would be a worse place. After all, Asgard is a place where actions have wide-reaching consequences, which is exemplified by Thor's initial aggressiveness towards the Frost Giants, which threatens the delicate balance of peace between the realms.

In contrast, Earth is portrayed in the film as being more grounded and humble, filled with people who are interested in doing good things for the world. On Earth, Thor learns the value of humility, compassion, and what being a hero truly means. The differences between the two worlds allow Thor to complete his arc from selfish, arrogant god to humble and kind hero, suggesting that sometimes all a person needs to change their behavior is a change of scenery.
