Thor (2011 Film) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Thor's hammer

Thor's hammer, Mjölnir, is a powerful symbol of his tremendous power. The hammer, which allows Thor to summon the power of lightning and fly, further underscores his status as a god and the power that is conferred to him because of it.

The Throne of Asgard

The Throne of Asgard symbolizes power and an aspiration for many people. In fact, Thor's brother Loki makes it his life mission to take control of the Throne of Asgard from his father, King Odin, so that he gains the privileges and power associated with it.

S.H.I.E.L.D.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. organization is symbolic of peace and order. Modeled after organizations like the C.I.A., S.H.I.E.L.D. often fights against villains who are interested in bringing violence, death, destruction, and chaos to the world.

Thor being punished

Because of his arrogance and brashness, Thor is frequently punished in the film. Mainly, he is punished by his father (who banishes him from the mortal world after taking too many risks on the battlefield) and his girlfriend, Jane Foster, who encourages him to become a better version of himself. This motif allows Thor to undergo a personal transformation from a selfish person to a more helpful, selfless person.
