The Rock Barrier
The rock barrier that initially separates Jerry from the other boys symbolizes an obstruction that keeps Jerry in a state of childish pursuit and imitation. While the more mature boys swim through the tunnel with ease, Jerry must take his time to learn about his surroundings before he can do so, effectively leaving his childhood behind.
The Sandy Beach
The sandy beach where Jerry's mother spends her days symbolizes safety and familiarity. Jerry remembers the beach from years past, but only this year decides to explore the more dangerous rocky bay area. After days spent training his lungs to swim through the rock tunnel, Jerry sees the sandy beach—once the only beach he knew—as a place for children.
