Aaron the Moor is one of the earliest examples of a racial or ethnic minority in a Shakespeare play. What features about him stand out to you?
Student opinion of Aaron the Moor may vary considerably. Although in recent critical examinations of Titus Andronicus, there has been a re-appraisal of his redeeming qualities, he still remains the play's most thoroughgoing and unredeemable villain. Accordingly, for some students he may seem more like Iago than like Othello – and more like the many caricatures of dark-skinned peoples in Elizabethan literature than any of the more nuanced characters that came later.
