    Sci-Fi Skits

    Kind of Activity:

    Creative Writing

    Objective:

    Students will engage in themes from the story and use them in a creative response.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.3

    Structure:

    To begin the assignment, ask students what major themes appear in “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and “The Day Before the Revolution.” Students will likely highlight themes such as progress, utopia, oppression, and radical politics.

    Then, instruct students to choose one of those themes and create a short skit (2-3 minutes) based on the theme. The skit should be based in science fiction or fantasy. You might require that students demonstrate some element of science...
