Day 2

Walled States, Waning Sovereignty Lesson Plan

Classroom Activities

  1. 1

    Understanding the Performativity of Walls

    Kind of Activity:

    Group Work

    Objective:

Students will gain a profound understanding of performativity, especially in relation to sovereignty and wall-building.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.11-12.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.11-12.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.11-12.6

    Structure:

Because the term "performative" that Brown uses in the text related to nation-states putting up walls could be easily misinterpreted, this activity will serve to clarify what Brown means. This will help students better understand the nuance of why nation-states are building walls more than ever before in today's world, according to Brown.
