Giraffe
There are several beautiful and amazing animals in the Circus; one of them is a giraffe. The author describes it as a timid, beautiful, and strange creature: “Her legs and neck are delicate. Her body sloped and covered with markings like puzzle pieces”. Her eyes are huge and dark and they remind the Universe: “Strange furry knobs poke out from the top of her triangular head, above her large ears.” Jacob is delighted when he sees this animal.
Sign of civilization
Jacob leaves his house and decides to look for something better for his life. He loses his way and “the only sign of civilization is the track, which rests on a raised bed of gravel. There is forest on one side and a small clearing on the other”. The brook, moonlight and silence remind that everything is a property of nature. This atmosphere attracts Jacob, but he desires to discover something, which belongs to civilization.
Like the first love
Jacob falls in love with Marlena, when he sees her for the first time in his life: “She looks so much like Catherine - the plane of her face, the cut of her hair, the slim thighs, which he has always imagined were under Catherine's staid skirts”. Marlena wears pink sequins, tights, and satin slippers. Jacob is enchanted by her. This beautiful blonde returns him to his memory about the first love.
