What Girls Need

What Girls Need Analysis

What Girls Need: How to Raise Bold, Courageous and Resilient Girls is a self-help and motivational book written by Dr Marisa Porges. The book was published on 4 August 2020 by publishing house, Vermilion.

The book details both Porges' own experience battling gender stereotypes in a male-dominated world as well as her current work as Headteacher at The Baldwin School: Private School for Girls, which has changed the way that young girls are growing up. Porges herself discusses the challenges in working and studying in male dominated fields throughout her professional career. Her varied background covers a degree in Geophysics from Harvard University, flying jets for the US Navy and working within the White House as an expert in counterterrorism.

The book aims to deconstruct the pre-conceived nature of how a girl is expected to grow up and the opportunities available to her in life. It aims to inspire a new generation of young women who are ready to take on the world with a strong head on their shoulders. New York Times bestselling author, Angela Duckworth, stated “Ideas of what girls need have changed so much, even in our lifetimes. I look forward to Marisa’s unique perspective on how we can support the audacity and ambition of girls everywhere!”
