Love
Love is generally seen in a romantic way towards a partner that someone will live with forever. In this story that is seen between many of the couples, but there is also love between friends. Will Grayson (1) comes to term with his love for his friendship with Tiny near the end of the book and Will Grayson (2) realizes how much he loves his mom and how much he needs her. Even with that, there is a lot of other types of love between other people, such as Tiny and his countless boyfriends and Will Grayson (1) and Jane.
Sexuality and Identity
There is the Gay-Straight Alliance in the high school that Will Grayson (1) goes to. It becomes a big part of the story as the musical Tiny writes sprouts from the alliance. Many of the characters in the story are a part of the LGBT community as well. Nick and Gary have an ongoing relationship through the story and Tiny and Will Grayson (2) also have a thing. With all these people being gay, its also important to look at how they shape their identity. Will Grayson (2) has to come to terms with his sexuality and figure out what he likes, while also trying to live the depressed life he already has.
Mental Health
Since Will Grayson (2) is depressed, it is very important that it is vocalized and talked about at depression and mental health illnesses are very serious. The authors do a good job of containing enough of the serious tone when talking through Will Grayson (2) but it still needs to be acknowledged as something big that Will has to overcome throughout the story. From the start to the end, he changes for the better with the help of his new friends, but it not truly something to define him by. He must be defined by his other aspects and accomplishments, making him a great person.
