How does Dr. Heidegger's past compare to the pasts of his guests?
Dr. Heidegger and his guests are all old, and have suffered misfortunes during their lives. Dr. Heidegger's fiancé died as a result of taking one of his prescriptions. The Widow Wycherly has spent much of her life living in seclusion, ostracized from the community because of rumors of scandal. Mr. Melbourne was once prosperous, but was not careful with his money.
