    Reuben loves his son and sees in him another version of the best parts of himself.

    Both characters carry around guilty feelings that embitter their interactions with the world. However, Reuben's interactions are colored entirely by the weight of his feelings about leaving Roger Malvin in the woods and lying to Dorcas, while Young Goodman Brown is also burned by disillusioned by the hypocrisy he perceives in the people around him.
