    Why do you think Aduayom and Mhute decided to do a photo essay with Howard Law School graduates? What is significant about their choice?

    Some students may focus on the fact that the photo essay is all about graduates of Howard University, an HBCU. In focusing on the powerful legacies and promising futures of the recent graduates, it suggests that HBCUs are still important, even in a post-segregation South. Other students may focus on the law school aspect of the photo essay. Much of The 1619 Project talks about law and policy as being crucial to understanding the legacy of slavery. It is fitting, then, that the final portion of this issue includes descendants of slaves...
