Alex is released from prison. He goes to a cafeteria, drinks a cup of tea, and reads a newspaper, where he sees that the government is proud of reducing violence, and then finds an article about himself and his cure, as well as a separate article praising Ludovico's Technique. Alex goes home to his parents' apartment, but he's startled to find that they have taken in a boarder, Joe. Joe is very defensive of Alex's parents, who had not been alerted to Alex's release.
