    What motivates F. Alexander's friends in their responses to Alex?

    The three men feel strongly that Alex could be good for their cause, which is a form of resistance to the State that they do not clarify and Alex does not seem to understand. They are thinking of him as a powerful symbol, someone who can help the public understand the atrocities the State has committed against him. Therefore they are excited to house him and support him — but not to listen to him, nor to help his emotional life.
