    Consider how many things have gone wrong as Frederic makes his way from the front to the hospital in Milan. What does this do to the reader's perception of his injury?

    Generally, being injured in battle is considered a noble act, and one that should be honored. Frederic's transition from battlefield to hospital is anything but honorable, however. Have students consider all that has gone wrong: he is bled on while being escorted from the front; the other patient in his ambulance dies; his trip to Milan takes two days and is unpleasant; his minders have difficulty with his stretcher; and there are bureaucratic problems when he initially arrives.
