The book is divided into two narratives, both set in southern Sudan. One takes place in 2008, in a time that seems relatively stable. The other takes place in 1985 during the tumult of the Second Sudanese Civil War. The two main characters are Nya and Salva. Both are eleven years old and face major struggles for survival.
