    What is Salva's experience like in the Akobo desert? What is the thing that finally makes him succumb to emotion?

    The landscape and climate of the Akobo are unbelievable to Salva. Though he comes from a dry climate, his village at least had trees, shrubs, and grass. Here there is nothing, only rocks, and a few stunted bushes. During the day, the air is still and blazing hot to the point that it is hard to breathe. Salva's shoes disintegrate, and thorns pierce his feet. He manages to push forward, but when a rock rips off his toenail, putting him in extreme pain, he breaks down in tears.
