What have the three children learned about their mothers—and each other's—through the Happy Medium?
Meg and Charles are able to see their mother in a moment of revealing unhappiness. She's stayed relatively stable for the sake of her children, but she clearly misses her husband deeply and feels helpless to change what's happening. Meg has also learned that Calvin comes from what seems to be an unhappy and unstable family—his mother seems much older than she is, and in the brief moment that they see her, she screams at and hits her young children. Calvin doesn't seem to see this as unusual, and he tells Me that he would "rather have her know."
