The memoir is divided into three parts. The first is subtitled Becoming Me, and in it the author details her early life on the south side of Chicago. An eager and diligent student, she soon established herself as one of the stars of her high school and won a place at Princeton University. She entered Harvard Law School after graduating Princeton; this would change her life in more ways than one. It led to a position as a junior lawyer at the law firm Sidley Austin, headquartered in Chicago, allowing her to return to her roots closer to home again.
While working at Sidley Austin, Michelle met Barrack Obama.
Becoming Us shares Michelle's memories of the early days of their romance, which led quite quickly to marriage; the newlyweds, both dedicated to their careers, and the goals that they had set for themselves, but focused mainly on enabling Barrack Obama to transition from community organizer to United States senator; it also follows the beginnings of his political career in the Illinois State Senate. When the result of the election in 2008 was announced, Mrs Obama found herself First Lady of the United States.
In the final section of the book, Becoming More, Mrs Obama details the Obama family's life at the White House; her unlikely but genuine friendship with former President George Bush Jr, the sweet and welcoming notes left for her daughters by Jenna and Barbara Bush, the former President's daughters. She also writes about the difficulty in carving out a role for herself whilst married to the President of the United States, and her healthy eating campaign that she introduced into schools. As well as details of the political events during their time at the White House, Mrs Obama concentrates more on the details of raising the First Daughters, and the way in which they maintained family life despite being in the spotlight from morning to night.
